Munchkins Miniature Shetland Rescue was set up in 2014 to rescue miniature shetland ponies from abuse, abandonment and neglect. They achieved charity status in February 2015 (registered charity number 1160509).
All of their ponies are treated as individuals with their own personalities and temperaments. They live in a herd and have an established hierarchy. The male ponies are gelded upon arrival as Munchkins do not support indiscriminate breeding.
New arrivals are health checked and placed in isolation to ensure that they are disease-free before being introduced to the rest of the herd. They soon relax and become one of the family with the love, kindness and support from Munchkin’s wonderful volunteers.
Munchkins currently rehome ponies within a 30-50 mile radius of their centre in East Devon on a long term loan basis. They have currently rehomed around 55 ponies and love visiting them in their new homes. The ponies will always remain under the ownership of Munchkins so that if circumstances change, they will be returned to the centre so that their future is secured.
Munchkins offer a home to miniature shetlands who are in genuine need and provide all the necessary attention plus an extra bit of ‘TLC’. Their ponies have restricted grazing in the summer as they can be prone to laminitis. They have ad-lib hay in the winter and have access to salt and mineral blocks and additional herbs.
