Mare & Foal Sanctuary

Mare & Foal Sanctuary

The Mare And Foal Sanctuary was founded in 1988 by Rosemary Kind, who has rescued and looked after horses and ponies all her life. In 1992 the Sanctuary became a Registered Charity, and has since rescued and found loving homes for a large number of horses and ponies.

The Sanctuary’s aims are not just to rescue neglected, unwanted or abused horses but when possible to rehabilitate, retrain and eventually rehome them into loving, knowledgeable environments. They also try to educate people on all aspects of horse welfare.

In July 2005 they managed to purchase their first farm which ended 17 years of renting properties for the Sanctuary. This was a huge step forward, giving new-found security to all their horses and they are extremely grateful to all their supporters who have made this, and subsequent farm purchases possible. The Mare and Foal sanctuary have since expanded further across the South West. They now own four farms in total as well as having recently built a new Welfare and Veterinary Centre next door to their headquarters at Newton Abbot.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary have helped nearly five hundred horses and ponies and currently have nearly three hundred cared for at loan-homes away from the sanctuary. They continue to support their horses and carers through regular home visits.
