The Donkey Sanctuary does not rehome but instead offers a fostering service.
Donkeys are fantastic, and foster owners often tell The Donkey Sanctuary how much fun it is to give a loving home to these amazing animals. They occasionally also have mules and ponies looking for foster homes as well.
As a registered charity they are always grateful for any assistance – whether financial or otherwise – that helps them to care for thier growing family of rescued and unwanted donkeys. Fostering donkeys is one of the most amazing things you can do to help both financially and in terms of freeing up staff to provide more specialist care to donkeys that need it most.
What would you need?
The Donkey Sancturary generally ask foster homes to provide;
- Around an acre of grazing per pair of donkeys;
- An area of hard-standing – donkeys’ feet are really porous so they need to be able to get off the grass when it’s wet;
- A shelter or stable – donkeys don’t have waterproof coats like horses. This will also provide shade from the sun on summer days;
- Robust fencing – donkeys can be great escape artists!
Don’t worry if you haven’t got any or all of these in place yet – their welfare officers will be able to advise you.
